The Clearest Path
Last updated: pending final legal review

This is the same Privacy Policy shown in the app, reproduced here in full. It is pending a full legal review before public launch; please read it as a good-faith, accurate description of what the app actually does today, not a final legal document.

This Privacy Policy explains how The Clearest Path ("we," "us," "our") collects, uses, stores, and protects your information when you use our mobile application and website (together, the "Service"). It is written to reflect exactly what the app actually does, not a generic template.

1. Who we are

The Clearest Path is operated by Stephanie Murphy, a sole proprietor based in Ontario, Canada. If you have questions about this policy or your data, contact us at support@theclearestpath.app.

2. Information we collect

Sensitive and personal content. Decisions, journal entries, saved principles and other reflections may contain deeply personal information, including information about faith, relationships, family, emotional experiences, health, finances or other sensitive circumstances. We treat this content as private user content and use it only as described in this Policy.

Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address and authentication credentials, handled through our authentication provider (Supabase Auth). We do not see or store your password in plain text.

Decision content. When you use the app to work through a decision, we collect what you write: the situation you describe, your options, fears, values, who else is affected, counsel you've sought, and related fields you choose to fill in. This is the core content the app exists to help you reflect on. To generate your guidance, this content is sent to Anthropic, our AI processing provider, as described fully in Section 4 below. The same applies to Everyday Decisions, the shorter, everyday version of this, and to the 60-second pause feature, both of which send the specific words you enter for that moment to Anthropic in the same way, for the same purpose. "Private" in this policy means visible only to you among other users and never sold or used for advertising. It does not mean this content never leaves your device, since generating AI guidance requires sending the relevant content to our AI provider at the moment you request it.

Journal entries. If you keep a journal in the app, we store what you write, and, if you choose to add them, photos and voice recordings you attach to an entry. A photo can come either from your existing photo library or, if you choose, directly from your device's camera; either way, only the photo you select or take is stored, nothing else from your camera or library. Photos and audio are stored in a private, access-controlled storage location; only you can retrieve them, via short-lived signed links generated when you view your own entry.

Notes to your future self. If you write a note to be delivered back to you at a later date you choose, we store that text and the delivery date until it is delivered, so we can return it to you at the right time.

Personal Principles. If you save a "personal principle" for the app to remember, we store that text and may reference it in future reflections, clearly framed as something you noted previously.

Faith and guidance preferences. We store preferences you set, such as your preferred content depth and guidance tone, so the app can tailor its reflections to you.

Subscription status. If you subscribe to The Clearest Path Plus, our payment and subscription processing partner (RevenueCat, and the App Store or Google Play as applicable) shares your subscription status and purchase history with us. We do not receive or store your full payment card details; those are handled directly by Apple, Google, or our payment processor.

Location, only when you use it. If you use the church-finder feature, your device's location (or an address you type in) is sent, at the time of your search, to look up nearby results. We do not store a history of your location searches beyond what's needed to show you results in that moment.

Usage and device information. We may collect limited technical information (such as app version, device type, and general diagnostic/crash information) to keep the app working reliably. As of this policy's last update, we do not run third-party advertising or behavioral-tracking analytics. If this changes, we will update this policy and, where required, ask for your consent first.

3. How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • Provide the core functionality of the app: generating reflective guidance, saving your journal, remembering your principles, and showing you your own decision history.
  • Operate account access, subscriptions, and customer support.
  • Automatically screen content for safety purposes before generating guidance (see Section 6 below); this is an automated process, not human review of your content in the ordinary course.
  • Maintain and improve the reliability and security of the Service.
  • Communicate with you about your account, such as confirming your subscription or responding to a support request.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your decision or journal content for advertising, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

4. How AI guidance is generated

When you ask for reflective guidance, through a guided decision, Everyday Decisions, the 60-second pause, a revisit of a past decision, or your monthly Wisdom Letter, the specific content relevant to that request (what you've written, or, for the Wisdom Letter, a summary of that month's activity), along with your saved preferences and any personal principles you've chosen to save, is sent to Anthropic, the company that provides the Claude AI model we use to generate guidance, strictly to produce your response. Anthropic processes this content as our data processor under their commercial API terms, and, consistent with those terms as of this writing, does not use data submitted through this kind of API access to train their models. You should independently confirm Anthropic's current data-use terms, as they may be updated over time; we will update this policy if our understanding changes.

We do not send your account email, full name, or other directly identifying account details to the AI model as part of generating guidance, only the decision content itself and the preferences described above.

5. Who we share information with

We disclose information only as needed to the following service providers, to operate the features you actually use. Never to data brokers or advertisers, and never for their own marketing purposes:

  • Supabase: our database, authentication, and backend storage provider; hosts your account and content.
  • Anthropic: receives the content relevant to your request when you invoke an AI-guidance feature, strictly to generate that response. See Section 4 above.
  • RevenueCat: manages subscription status; does not receive your journal or decision content.
  • Apple / Google: handle app distribution and process payment for subscriptions; we do not see your card details.
  • Google Places: if you use the church-finder feature, your search query or location is sent to Google to return nearby results.

These are service providers processing information on our behalf to run the Service, not third parties we sell or share your information with for their own purposes.

6. Safety screening: what it is and is not

Before generating guidance, the app automatically screens what you've written for indicators of immediate danger to you or someone else (for example, explicit statements about self-harm, or descriptions of an active, dangerous situation). This screening is automated, a combination of local pattern-matching and a separate, classification-only AI check, not a person reviewing your content in real time.

Private journal entries are not automatically submitted to our AI guidance or safety-screening systems simply because you write or save them. If you intentionally use a feature that asks the Service to analyze or respond to journal content, the content you submit through that feature may be processed as described in this section and in Section 4 above.

If this screening identifies a possible crisis, the app does not generate ordinary AI guidance for that request. Instead, it shows you a dedicated screen with crisis resources (such as 911 and 988 for Canada and the US). The Clearest Path is not a crisis service, an emergency service, or a substitute for professional medical, mental health, legal, or financial care. If you are in crisis or in danger, please contact emergency services or an appropriate crisis line directly.

We do not maintain a separate, permanent log specifically cataloguing which users have triggered this screening. Ordinary decision and journal content is retained the same way any other content you save is retained, described below.

7. Where your data is stored

Your account and content data is stored with Supabase, our database and backend provider, in their Canada (central) data region. Photos and audio you attach to journal entries are stored in Supabase's private storage service, in the same region.

8. Data retention and deletion

You can delete individual decisions, journal entries, and saved principles from within the app at any time.

You can also delete your entire account from Settings. Account deletion removes your account and associated user content from our active systems, subject to limited retention where reasonably necessary for backups, security, fraud prevention, legal obligations, dispute resolution or records we are required to maintain. Backup copies may persist for a limited period before being overwritten or deleted.

9. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can access and export your own content directly within the app. To exercise other rights, or if you have questions, contact us at support@theclearestpath.app.

If you are a resident of Canada, your information is handled in accordance with applicable Canadian privacy law (including PIPEDA). If you are a resident of a jurisdiction with its own specific privacy law (such as a US state privacy law or the EU/UK GDPR), you may have additional rights under that law; contact us and we will do our best to accommodate applicable requests.

10. Children's privacy

The Clearest Path is intended for users who are 18 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect information from children under this age. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.

11. Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit and database-level access controls that restrict each user's data to that user alone (Supabase Row Level Security). No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

12. International users

We are based in Ontario, Canada, and our primary application database is hosted in Canada. Some service providers may process information in the United States or other countries. As a result, information may be subject to the laws of the jurisdiction in which it is processed. We use service providers and safeguards appropriate to the nature of the information and applicable law.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will provide notice within the app or by another reasonable means before the changes take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.

14. Contact us

This document is a working draft prepared to reflect the actual current functionality of The Clearest Path as accurately as possible. It is not a substitute for review by a qualified privacy lawyer, and should be reviewed by one before or as soon as reasonably practical after this app is made publicly available, particularly given the sensitive nature of the content it handles.
